Winona Ryder Professionally Winona Ryder, was born in Winona Minnesota. She was named by her parents in honor of the town where she was born. Michel Horowitz was her father and Cynthia Palmer, his mother who were both authors as well as editors. Ryder is a Jew. Ryder believes that her father had an Jewish heritage. Her half-siblings are younger, Jubal and Sunyata. Ryder moved along with her family in Mendocino County California at the age of seven. The family didn't have electricity. Ryder became an avid reading book because there was no TV. Ryder aged 12 took up a place at the American Conservatory Theatre for acting classes in 1983. When she was 15, Ryder landed a role in Lucas the first of her major film. Ryder was bullied at high school. She hoped that her acting career would change the way she dealt with bullying. However, unfortunately, it didn't work out. It was a dream she pursued. Her first big break came in 1988 with Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. Ryder was able to continue her successful performances in several movies. In 1993 Ryder was twice nominated to win Academy Awards. One of the nominations was for her part as a character in The Age of Innocence.
